Canadian
pianist,
Michelle Schumann, is a highly sought after solo and collaborative
artist. The Austin American Statesman has described Schumann’s
performances as “masterly (and) alive to the rhythmic variety and
dissonance of the music, while also drawing out every exotic and
melodic color of the score.” Her performances have been described as
top arts events by the Austin American Statesman and she has been
nominated by the Austin Critics Table Awards for best
instrumentalist (2003).
She is co-founder and pianist for the Barbwire Music Project
(barbwire.org), an Austin, Texas-based new music group, and also
performs regularly with Bridge, a cello-piano duo with Joel Becktell,
principal cellist with Sante Fe Pro Musica and the Tosca String
Quartet. She performs with many professional ensembles including, The
Meridian Arts Ensemble, Austin Lyric Opera, the Austin Symphony
Orchestra, Ballet Austin, and the Austin Chamber Music
Center. Ms. Schumann has appeared as concerto soloist with
orchestras in Austin, Calgary, Cleveland, and Milwaukee.
Additional musical collaborations have included the Royal Winnipeg
Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and New York City
Ballet.
Festivals that Ms. Schumann has performed at include Tanglewood, Long
Beach Opera Festival, The International Festival Institute at
Round Top, Bang on a Can Summer Institute at the Massachusetts Museum
of Modern Art, Banff Festival of Music and Sound, International
Institute of Music in Munich, Germany, Victoria International Festival,
and the Bartok 2000 International Congress.
Dr. Schumann has served on faculty at Mount Royal College Conservatory
(Calgary, Alberta) and has held teaching assistantships at the
University of Calgary and University of Texas at Austin where she
respectively received her bachelor and master degrees with
distinction. Additionally, she has served as opera coach and repetiteur
at the Austin Lyric Opera and the Austrian American Mozart
Academy in Salzburg, Austria.
Currently, Dr. Schumann is Assistant Professor of Piano and
Artist-in Residence at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton,
Texas and serves as repetiteur and orchestral pianist with Long
Beach Opera. She holds a doctorate from the University of Texas
at Austin and her primary teachers include Olga Radosavljevich,
Marilyn Engle, Gregory Allen, Anton Nel and James Dick; she has
participated in masterclasses with Emanuel Ax, Sergei Babayan, David
Burge, Gil Kalish, Ursula Oppens and Peter Serkin, and has
studied collaborative piano with Anne Epperson, Karl Paulnack, and
Samuel Sanders.
